Courcheval Airport, located 6,588 feet above sea level in the French Alps, is a tricky airport to land at in the best conditions. At 1,722 feet, the runway is short, and the mountain at the end means there are no go-arounds. You get one shot. Last Friday, the pilot of this Piper Malibu Mirage landed long and fast, and luckily had a large snowbank at the end of the runway to cushion his mistake. I’m not sure why the people heard in this video are laughing, since it’s no laughing matter. Perhaps a little too much après-ski. The passengers suffered only minor injuries and were treated at the airport care center.

Here’s another angle.

At 6,600' in a Malibu, I think you’re pretty much have be perfect (or better) to land on a 1,700' runway unless you had a decent headwind.

Pilot should taken caution with the wintry conditions and installed snow tires.

The first half of that runway is uphill, and I’m sure that would help. But this guy was going so fast that the hill probably acted like a ski ramp.  I watched another video of a guy landing a Mooney there and just before he touched down the stall warning hooter went off. A lot less speed to begin with, but I would imagine that’s what you want at Courcheval.

The up slope is a big help, yes.

On a short runway like that, you definitely would like to hear that stall horn in the flare.

I like that. It’s a better headline than the one I came up with.

I hadn’t noticed. That’s either hilarious or ironic or both.

St Bart’s has an airport that has a steep hill on one side and water on the other. Takes a lot of skill to land there and you only see small planes.

Reminds me of Toncontin in Honduras, where the planes basically fly down a hillside to get to the runway.

I was going to say, the crash isn’t funny but that registration sure is
